How does Mercury Retrograde affect our art?

PictureIt's always rough starting up new work, so much new space to fill...
I have put away a few of my large finished pieces to make room for a field of new canvases, just now starting to take shape, though not without a little drama! New beginnings for me are always tricky, because until you have a baseline of paint on the canvas, each step you take hits the image space hard. You hope for good results, because, even despite the detailed notes I take, and follow, I seem to find myself discovering new reactions or behaviors based on room temp, or thickness of application, or just the way those two colors decided to mix today. All those well intentioned plans often take on lives of their own once we get to the canvas. I know that consistency is the name of the game when it comes to being a great painter, but I also love to explore the medium and let the surface take on its own unplanned characteristics...or, maybe the truer statement would be, 'I love to see the surprise results that are not at all what I had intended!'

And this week (this whole next month +) with Mercury in Retrograde, things are starting not do as I intended. As if on call. "It’s a bumpy ride this week. The planets are in transition, and so are we. And while I don’t and won’t blame the stars for cranky attitudes, as most of us know, shifts—emotional, psychological, spiritual, or physical—are often uncomfortable, especially if you’re feeling tired, overworked, stretched too thin, or just downright suspicious of what’s going to happen next. Anticipate resistance, yours or others’, as many of us try figure out how to handle these jarring rhythms of change. Just be aware, the pushback may simply be a reflexive action rather than a real refusal to cooperate. Also be prepared to feel out of sorts with no plausible explanation for your malaise. Of course, it’s not all bad news—plenty of people are thriving even in the midst of the current state of transformational intensity, particularly those who are living from the inside out, making peace with what is, even if that means breathing through moments of profound uncertainty, trusting that the eventual outcome will be positive...Mercury Retrograde begins today, so even if you want to hurry the adjustment process, you’re not likely to move through it too quickly. The best solution is to breathe, deeply, as often as necessary, and to give yourself and those you love plenty of time to acclimate...." or so says my favorite weekly astrological horoscope resource AquariumAge.com.

This is going to be a time for me decide whether to push through the uncontrollable nature of the next month or put the sensitive pieces aside until I can get back on top of what is going to happen.

PictureMe with my Jesus in Blue at the Art of the Garden
That's me at at the Shack Art Center's Art of the Garden show,  my most recent participation in a gallery show, in over 20 years (since college)... granted, just one of my paintings, but still, I felt honored to be featured on such a beautiful wall of paintings and sculpture!

My new 'career' path is exciting and exhilarating! I am digging the whole experience and am excited to be supported by my community to continue to work in this field.  My recent open studio at Gasworks Gallery was gangbusters as well and again, thank you to all who came and gave me such wonderful feedback!

Today, for me, is about taking a bit of an aside from my own painting work.  I am preparing my studio&works, for some ceiling updates which have to be done in order for me to get to my planned big pours. My work is at a good stage to step back and really check it out.

So, as I take pause to collect my thoughts and do an inventory, I am reminded to look outwards and take in the world. Which is, exactly what these guys, Authors of MarriedwithLuggage.com, Warren and Betsy Talbot, are doing for the past few years -- all out. They are on this radical life journey, on which they are finding the art of, well...it all. Life.

And then also, wow. This is Colossal does it again, finding these awesome artists! This is kinetic artist, Anthony Howe. Be sure to check out this video of him making this amazing works. Pretty cool to watch. Caution: this sculptures can make you dizzy!

Huichol Peyote, 60x40, Acrylic on canvas, 2013, in-progress
It's been a busy few weeks in the studio trying to get through a couple of large projects. This bad boy Huichol Peyote has been a bear and has sat for the last month idle and broken. This week it came back alive...and I am so relieved and overjoyed. I am beside myself excited about this one and feel so grateful that this piece, dedicated to the beautiful native Huichol Indians of Mexico and on up through the southwest.

Their work requires so much stillness and concentration, the practice is far beyond my ability to represent their bead work with my paint brush. Nevertheless I am feeling the spirit and am looking forward to its debut tomorrow evening at our open studios. Come on down and see how far I get! 3815 4th Ave NE.

This one is alive, and is a beast as well. I can't seem to leave it be and I keep "unfinishing" it! Drats! Oh how these painted animals tame us!

All of my life, from my earliest memories as I child, I have felt as though I view the world through some sort of magical frame. To this day I carry that feeling, as though I can look anywhere and see beauty, see nature and objects sparking. Even in a garbage-strewn alley, I can see the poetry of the place, as a breathing image right there on the lenses of my eyes.
