Inflorescence: The Process of Blooming

Life has been insane, since the beginning of the year I have been sidetracked by excruciating family life drama, that forced me to leave my board of directors position with my beloved CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) as well as my condominium board, and my artwork was completely sidelined. Things have improved slowly and I've pushed myself as hard as I could with every single spare hour, late nights in the studio, every day, Sunday thru Sunday to get my new upcoming show completed (when is art complete?). Against so many odds, here I am! Come see the show, 5/26-6/20 in Twisp WA in the beautiful Methow Valley. Come out for a family holiday, a romantic mountain retreat or stunning golf courses, and stop by the wonderful Confluence Gallery to see the show!

Inflorescence:

The delicately powerful structure of the flowers on a plant. The process of flowering, as a festival is a celebration of achievement. The flower head of a plant, including stems, stalks, bracts, and mini flowers.

It all comes my fascination with the flowers of weeds, like Fennel, Dandelion, Queen Anne’s Lace and, of course, like any artist the great big blue skies and stars of the high desert. This show is a celebration of the success of the weeds among us in all of their glory, celebrated and draped in jewels and webs of golden and gems.

Against all odds and best efforts to tramp them, these magnificent plants and ecosystems prosper and reproduce and show off their triumph in the fields upon fields of the inflorescence of their mesmerizing flowers. This show has become about the festival of the tiniest world within these all but invisible places.

The inflorescence of a flower, comprised of dozens, even hundreds, of smaller flowers within its whole…a miracle of Nature’s geometry. I’ve extended the term to express a similar abstracted concept of Inflorescence found in the stars, or sparkling lights, or in the drops of dew on a web, or the arrangement of festival lanterns in the sky. The giant dandelions, flora, skyline and landscapes in and around the Methow Valley provide the backdrop for these works.

All of my life, from my earliest memories as I child, I have felt as though I view the world through some sort of magical frame. To this day I carry that feeling, as though I can look anywhere and see beauty, see nature and objects sparking. Even in a garbage-strewn alley, I can see the poetry of the place, as a breathing image right there on the lenses of my eyes.
